Op-Ed: Institutional Failure at Reuters

GIYUS (Give Israel Your United Support) has linked in a great article summarizing the Reuters mess. I especially love the way the article starts:

Though I am five thousand miles away, I think that I can detect the vibrations emanating from West Norwood Cemetery in London. For surely Paul Julius Reuter, the German rabbi's son who founded the Reuters News Agency a century and a half ago, is spinning in his grave.

Read the whole thing here

BTW, GIYUS is an organization dedicated to broadcasting the truth about the situation surrounding Israel and Jews around the world. If you click on this link, you can download a Windows 2000/XP program called "Megaphone" that sits in your Windows system tray and pops up every once in a while with a link to a poll, a news article, and sometimes even a video from the current conflict.

You can click "No Thanks" and it'll go right away, or if you click the link, it'll take you to that poll, news article, or video. The polls themselves are non-scientific, so I usually ignore them, but it's a great source for breaking news. Plus, it gives one an opportunity to do something with the information - with a few simple mouse clicks, I've written my Congressman and Senators via one of the Megaphone links. If you have time during the day to keep informed about current events and want to do something about it, please download and install the Megaphone software.

buruburu - there's fair criticism of how Israel is run politically, which happens all the time in the Knesset - Israel's parliament. MPs are both Jewish and non-Jewish and both have political parties.

Then there is unfair criticism of Israel (just to give you a two of many on the subject):

I and many others are for a fair and just solution to the Palestinian question - two states side-by-side, living in peace and security. Do you think I and other Jews WANT to rule over Palestinians? Get real.

I and many others want Israel out of Lebanon - but only when we know there will be peace and security on that border.

Meanwhile, deliberately false and fabricated information is being spread around in the media for the sole purpose of making Israel look bad and to incite hatred against Jews. Even after the information is corrected when the accurate facts are brought to the attention of those in charge, that same false and fabricated information is then repeated here on campus and around the world. Israel is charged with genocide; Jews control the government, the economy, and the media; and so on.

Once that false and fabricated information is out there, it takes a lot of work to correct it. Hence my blog and others. If we didn't do it, really nobody else would. Do you seek accuracy and the truth? So we ain't a lobby as you call it.

Welcome to the new anti-Semitism; Jews are considered unworthy of leading or defending themselves.

Oh, and to respond to your FAQ, "anti-Semitism" is a generally accepted denotation for hatred of Jews or anything Jewish. It's in the dictionaries; it's in the encyclopedias. Deal with it, my Athenian noise-maker (and given your blog's commentary, potential anti-Semite)

buruburu - you might also find this of interest:

"Anti-Zionism is often used to conceal hatred of Jews. Anti-Semitic views can be easily distinguished from legitimate criticism of Israel.

- Consider the source. Is the speaker someone with a history of anti-Jewish attitudes?

- Critics who habitually single out Israel for condemnation while ignoring far worse actions by other countries (especially other Middle Eastern countries) are anti-Semitic.

- Likening Israel to Nazi Germany, or to traditional anti-Jewish stereotypical behavior is another sure sign of Jew-baiting. (your reference to the US Secretary of State as Condoleeza Reich in your blog post fits here)

- Attacks on the merits of Israel's existence rather than individual government policies are anti-Semitic.

When approached by a student who attacked Zionism, Dr. Martin Luther King responded: 'When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You're talking anti-Semitism.'"
